Japan Taxicab Guide: How to Ride, Costs, and Apps

By Tour in Japan editors · Updated

Japanese taxis are clean, safe, and automatic — but expensive. Here's when they're worth it and how to use them.

Japanese taxis are clean, safe, and automatic — but expensive. Here's when they're worth it and how to use them.

When Taxis Make Sense

  • Groups of 3–4 — splitting a taxi is often cheaper than individual train tickets
  • Late night — after midnight when trains stop running
  • With heavy luggage — hauling suitcases on trains is painful
  • Short distances — 1–2 km walks in the rain
  • Remote areas — where public transport is limited
  • Business meetings — arriving fresh, not sweaty from a crowded train

How to Hail a Taxi

Street Hail

  • Look for a taxi with a green light on the dashboard (available)
  • Red light = occupied
  • Raise your hand to flag it down
  • The door opens automatically — don't touch it
  • The door closes automatically — don't touch it either

From Taxi Stands

  • Found at train stations, hotels, and major landmarks
  • Queue in the designated area
  • Staff may direct you to the next available taxi

Tips

  • Automatic doors — don't open or close them yourself
  • No tipping — tipping is not customary and can be confusing
  • Payment — most accept credit cards; some only cash (look for card logos)
  • Receipt — ask for "rēsho" (レシート) if you need one
  • Destination — show the Japanese address on your phone (Google Maps works great)
  • Quiet ride — drivers don't make small talk; that's normal
  • No eating in the taxi
  • Seatbelt — required by law for all passengers
  • Lost item — call the taxi company number on your receipt
