Tips for Cheap Flights to Japan
Book 3–6 months ahead
International flights to Japan tend to be cheapest 3–6 months before departure. Last-minute premium cabin deals exist, but economy fares climb sharply within 3 weeks.
Compare both Tokyo airports
Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND) both serve Tokyo. Haneda is closer and often pricier, but sometimes the total cost (flight + train into town) is lower. Check both.
Consider open-jaw itineraries
Fly into Tokyo, out of Osaka (or vice versa). Open-jaw tickets are often similarly priced and save you the cost of a domestic flight back to your origin.
Shoulder seasons = best value
Late September–October and April–May offer good weather and fewer crowds. Peak seasons (Golden Week Apr 29–May 5, Obon mid-Aug, New Year) are expensive year after year.
