From the viewing terrace, visitors can capture stunning photos of the lake’s calm, round surface and the surrounding volcanic peaks. Inside the facility, there’s a souvenir shop, café, and restaurant, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy local treats. It’s one of Hokkaido’s most famous onsen areas, known for its relaxing atmosphere, lakeside views, and active volcanic scenery. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Toyako lakeside promenade, where steam vents rise from the ground and foot baths (ashiyu) are available for free. ⏱ 40 minShōwa-Shinzan is a young volcanic mountain located near Lake Toya and Mount Usu in Shikotsu-Toya National Park. It was formed between 1943 and 1945 during volcanic eruptions that raised the surrounding wheat fields into a new mountain — hence its name, which means “Showa New Mountain.” Today, you can see steam rising from its red-brown slopes, showing that it’s still geothermally active. The area also features the Mt. Usu Ropeway, offering panoramic views of both Shōwa-Shinzan and Lake Toya.
