What To Expect

1

Stop 1

1h 30m

Nikko Toshogu is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 260 years. Unlike most Shinto shrines, it is intentionally lavish, using color, gold, and detailed carvings to symbolize political power and divine authority. This site perfectly represents the fusion of Shinto and Buddhism that shaped pre-modern Japan.

Futarasan Shrine is dedicated to the sacred mountains of Nikko, which have been worshipped as deities since ancient times. Rather than impressive buildings, the true focus here is nature itself—mountains, forests, and water. This shrine shows the original Shinto belief that gods reside in the natural world.

Stop 3

Rinno-ji represents Buddhism in Nikko. It was founded by the monk Shodo Shonin, who introduced Buddhism to this region in the 8th century. Together with Toshogu and Futarasan Shrine, it shows how Buddhism and Shinto coexisted in Japan for centuries.

This is a sample itinerary. Order and timing may change depending on traffic, weather, and guest preferences. Shinkyo Bridge is the sacred entrance to Nikko’s shrine and temple area. Traditionally, it marked the boundary between the ordinary world and the sacred realm. Crossing this bridge symbolically means entering a spiritual space.
