Kagoshima: Sengan-en Garden & Japan’s Industrial Revolution

Sengan-en is a historic daimyo garden created in the 17th century by the Shimazu clan, rulers of the Satsuma Domain. Designed to incorporate the dramatic form of Sakurajima volcano as a borrowed landscape, the garden represents the refined aesthetics of Japanese garden culture. Beyond its beauty, Sengan-en also played a key role in Japan’s early modernization, as the surrounding area became a center of industrial experimentation during the late Edo period.

The Shoko Shuseikan Museum introduces the ambitious modernization efforts of the Satsuma Domain during the 19th century. Through historical artifacts and exhibits, visitors learn about the Shuseikan Project, which brought Western science, engineering, and manufacturing technologies to Japan. Recognized as part of the Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution, the museum offers essential insight into how Kagoshima contributed to Japan’s transformation into a modern industrial nation.
