What To Expect
Stop 1
⏱ 3hAdmission includedArashiyama is a picturesque district in western Kyoto, celebrated for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. It’s best known for the iconic Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, where you can stroll along a magical path lined with towering bamboo. The area also features the historic Tenryu-ji Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage site) with beautiful gardens, as well as the scenic Togetsukyo Bridge, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and river. Popular highlights further include Iwatayama Monkey Park, where visitors can observe wild macaques in a natural setting while enjoying panoramic views over Kyoto. Arashiyama is especially enchanting in spring with cherry blossoms and in autumn when vibrant foliage transforms the landscape—making it a favorite destination year-round.
Stop 2
⏱ 1hAdmission includedKinkaku-ji, or the Golden Pavilion, was originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the shogun. After his death, the villa was transformed into a Zen Buddhist temple. The pavilion is renowned for its elegant fusion of traditional Japanese and Chinese-inspired architectural styles. The original structure was tragically destroyed by arson in 1950, but it was faithfully rebuilt in 1955. Today, the top two floors are covered in gold leaf, creating a brilliant reflection on the surrounding pond—symbolizing purity and enlightenment.
Stop 3
⏱ 1hNishiki Market (Nishiki Ichiba) is a lively, narrow shopping street stretching about five blocks, with more than 100 shops and restaurants. Often called “Kyoto’s Kitchen,” it’s dedicated to all things food-related—offering fresh seafood and produce, regional picks, Japanese sweets, knives, and cookware. It’s also a great place to sample seasonal specialties and Kyoto favorites such as pickles, dried seafood, and sushi. The market has a pleasant yet energetic atmosphere, making it ideal for travelers who want to explore the flavors Kyoto is famous for. Shops vary in size from small, narrow stalls to larger two-story stores, and many focus on a specific product. Almost everything sold here is locally sourced or produced.
Stop 4
⏱ 1hGion (祇園) is Kyoto’s most famous geisha district, located around Shijo Avenue between Yasaka Shrine in the east and the Kamo River in the west. The area is filled with traditional shops, restaurants, and Ochaya (teahouses), where geiko "the Kyoto term for geisha" and maiko (geiko apprentices) perform and entertain.
Stop 5
⏱ 1hKiyomizudera (清水寺) is one of Japan’s most beloved temples, famous for the feeling that you’re standing at the edge of nature and history. Its name—“Pure Water Temple”—comes from the Otowa Waterfall, whose clear waters flow from the hillside east of Kyoto, where the temple was established in 780. Known for its Buddhist heritage, Kiyomizudera was later linked to major Hosso traditions and eventually helped define the Kita Hosso sect in 1965. In 1994, it earned UNESCO World Heritage status. What truly sets it apart is the temple’s dramatic wooden stage, extending roughly 13 meters out over the slope from the main hall. It offers unforgettable views of the valley below—filled with cherry blossoms in spring and blazing maple colors in autumn.
Stop 6
⏱ 1hFushimi Inari Taisha is one of Kyoto’s best-known Shinto shrines, devoted to Inari, the kami of rice, prosperity, and business. The shrine traces its origins to 711 AD, and today it’s instantly recognizable for the maze of thousands of vivid red torii gates—called senbon torii—that line the mountain trails like doorways leading deeper into the sacred grounds. Many of the gates are donated by individuals and companies, each one representing a wish for good fortune, protection, or success. You’ll also spot fox statues, which are traditionally seen as Inari’s messengers. As you climb the route, the winding path rewards you with sweeping views over Kyoto.
