Goma Fire Ritual and Ajikan Meditation Experience at Shodoshima

Sekimon-do, the 18th sacred site of the Shodoshima Pilgrimage, is a mystical mountain sanctuary embraced by sheer rock cliffs. In the Momiji Valley within the precincts, fresh greenery in spring, vibrant foliage in autumn, and exposed rugged rock faces in winter create solemn scenery that changes with the seasons. Far removed from human settlements, the only sounds are birdsong and flowing water. In this profound silence, away from worldly distractions, the mind naturally becomes calm.

Inside the cave, participants will experience a Goma fire ritual conducted before the principal deity, Shōgun Jizō. Surrounded by rising flames and the resonant chanting of sutras, a special time unfolds for deep introspection. In addition, Ajikan meditation—held in a space not normally open to the public—guides participants toward deep healing as they unite breath with the rhythms of nature. After the experience, tea and traditional sweets will be served as an offering, providing an opportunity for warm communication with the head priest and local parishioners. Encountering both the solemn spirituality of the sacred site and the warmth of the people creates a journey of “prayer and renewal” that nourishes body and soul.
