Your adventure begins at Takaosanguchi Station, the gateway to Mt. Takao. Just about one hour from central Tokyo, this charming mountain station already feels like a small escape from the city. Here, you will meet your friendly local guide Masa and go over the day’s plan. After a short introduction, we’ll begin walking toward the trailhead together. Before starting the hike, you can purchase water, snacks, or lunch at a convenience store near the station. It’s a great opportunity to prepare for the hike or pick up something to enjoy at the summit. If you prefer a lighter start, this is also where we can choose to take the cable car or chair lift partway up the mountain. Restrooms and small shops are available before we begin. From here, we leave the busy city behind and step into nature.

Mt. Takao offers several hiking routes, each with a different atmosphere and level of difficulty. Before the tour, you’ll complete a short questionnaire, and your guide Masa will choose the best course based on your fitness level, interests, and mood for the day. You might walk along a peaceful forest trail beside a mountain stream, climb a ridge with open views, or pass through cultural spots on the way to the summit. Some routes are gentle and ideal for first-time hikers, while others offer a bit more challenge for those who want a workout. Along the way, we’ll take breaks, enjoy nature, and share stories about Japanese culture and mountain traditions. The pace is relaxed and flexible — this isn’t a race, but an experience. If needed, the cable car or chair lift can be used to make the hike easier. With Masa leading the way, it feels less like a tour and more like hiking with a local friend.

Ōmiharashidai is one of the most famous viewpoints on Mt. Takao. After climbing through the forest, you’ll reach an open observation deck with sweeping views of Tokyo’s western mountains. On clear days, you may even see Mt. Fuji rising in the distance — a perfect photo opportunity and a rewarding moment after the climb. Depending on timing and conditions, we will find a comfortable spot near the summit area to enjoy a simple lunch together. This relaxed moment is an opportunity to rest, recharge and take in the scenery. You can bring food or purchase something at the shop along the way. We’ll take our time here — enjoying the view, sharing conversation, and taking photos. This is often the moment when guests truly feel the balance of nature and city that makes Mt. Takao so special.

Founded over 1,300 years ago, Takaosan Yakuo-in is a historic temple located along some of the main routes to the summit. Mt. Takao has long been considered a sacred mountain, and this temple reflects a unique blend of Buddhism, Shinto, and mountain worship traditions. Depending on the chosen hiking course, we may pass through the temple grounds during our climb. If included, you’ll see impressive wooden gates, colorful statues, and the famous tengu figures — spiritual guardians of the mountain. Masa will share simple and easy-to-understand stories about the temple’s history and symbolism, without turning the visit into a heavy religious lecture. You’re welcome to observe, take photos, or try a traditional style of prayer if you’d like. Whether we visit the temple or not, you’ll learn how Mt. Takao balances nature, spirituality, and everyday life in Japan.

After the hike, you may choose to relax at Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu, a spacious and popular hot spring facility located near Takaosanguchi Station. This modern onsen offers multiple indoor and outdoor baths, providing a comfortable way to ease tired muscles after hiking. It’s especially recommended for guests who want a full traditional Japanese hot spring experience in a large, well-equipped setting. Please note that guests with visible tattoos are generally not permitted to enter this facility due to onsen policy. After bathing, you can enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant (additional cost). Soaking in hot water and then sharing a relaxed meal is a perfect way to end the day.
