It stands almost exactly as it did when it was bombed, serving as a poignant reminder of the devastation caused by nuclear weapons and advocating for the abolition of such arms and the importance of global peace. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum was established in 1955 with the aim of conveying the reality of the damage caused by the atomic bomb to people around the world and contributing to the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of everlasting world peace, which are the core values of Hiroshima. At 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, Hiroshima became the first city in the world to suffer the devastation of an atomic bomb. The city was largely destroyed, and many lives were lost. Even those who survived suffered significant physical and psychological trauma, with many survivors still experiencing suffering to this day. The Peace Memorial Museum collects and exhibits artifacts of survivors, as well as photographs and documents depicting the devastation caused by the bombing. It also provides information on the history of Hiroshima before and after the bombing and the state of affairs during the nuclear age.
