Luxury Train Journeys in Japan: Seven Stars, Shiki-shima, Twilight Express

Japan's luxury trains offer rolling hotel experiences through some of the country's most scenic landscapes. Here is everything you need to know about booking and what to expect.

Luxury train journeys in Japan represent a category of travel experience with no equivalent elsewhere in the world. The country operates several bespoke cruise trains designed not as transport but as moving hotels, where the journey itself is the destination. Suites designed by acclaimed architects, kaiseki dining sourced from the regions the train passes through, and curated stop-off excursions to temples, farms, and craft workshops turn a multi-day train journey into a fully orchestrated luxury experience. The demand for Japan's luxury trains consistently outstrips supply, and some departures receive applications from hundreds of would-be passengers for a handful of suites. Understanding how each train differs, what the booking process involves, and what realistic alternatives exist is essential for anyone considering this category of Japan travel.

Seven Stars in Kyushu: Japan's First Cruise Train

Seven Stars in Kyushu, operated by JR Kyushu, was Japan's first cruise train when it launched in 2013 and remains the most awarded. The 14-carriage train carries only 30 passengers in seven suites and one royal suite, and offers both 4-day and 2-day itineraries that loop through Kyushu's mountains, coast, and onsen regions. The interiors were designed by Eiji Mitooka, the same designer responsible for many of Kyushu's iconic trains, in a Showa-era retro style using local woods and crafts.

The 4-day itinerary departs Sunday from Hakata (Fukuoka) and returns Wednesday, covering Yufuin, Nagasaki, Sasebo, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, and Miyazaki. Dinner is served in the observation-lounge dining car using seasonal Kyushu ingredients. Rates for the 4-day journey start at around 550,000 yen per person in a twin suite. Bookings open six months ahead and require a lottery application on the JR Kyushu website.

Train Suite Shiki-shima: JR East's Answer to Seven Stars

JR East launched Train Suite Shiki-shima in 2017 as a direct competitor to Seven Stars. The 10-car train carries only 34 passengers in 17 suites and operates 4-day and 2-day journeys through eastern Japan including Tohoku and Hokkaido. The exterior is clad in gold-toned lacquer and the interiors feature hinoki cypress wood, urushi lacquerware, and traditional craft elements from the regions visited. A glass-roofed observation car at the front provides panoramic views of the landscape.

Other Luxury Train Options

  • Seven Stars in Kyushu: 4-day from 550,000 yen per person; lottery booking opens 6 months ahead
  • Train Suite Shiki-shima (JR East): 4-day from 550,000 yen per person; lottery booking required
  • Twilight Express Mizukaze (JR West): 3-day from 450,000 yen per person, San-in and Sanyo coast route
  • Kyushu Odan Tokkyuu (semi-luxury): day train crossing Kyushu, bookable normally, around 20,000 yen
  • Itoko limited express (JR Shikoku scenic route): premium day train around 12,000 yen per leg
  • The Royal Express (Izukyu): premium Izu Peninsula day excursion train, from 25,000 yen
  • Romantic Car (Odakyu, Hakone): elegant older scenic train to Hakone, around 1,100 yen supplement

For most travelers who want a luxury train experience without the lottery and the six-figure price tag, the accessible premium scenic trains like the Twilight Express Mizukaze's day excursion options or The Royal Express provide a taste of the aesthetic without the multi-day commitment. The cruise trains themselves are genuinely difficult to book and require real advance planning. If attending Japan via a luxury travel specialist or concierge service, booking assistance for the cruise trains is worth requesting as they sometimes have access to allocations not available through the public lottery.
