Ishigaki Island: Snorkeling, Manta Rays, and Remote Beaches
Ishigaki Island in Japan's Yaeyama archipelago offers manta ray encounters, spectacular snorkeling at Kabira Bay, and a relaxed base for exploring remote Yaeyama islands.
Ishigaki Island anchors Japan's Yaeyama archipelago, a scattered chain of islands closer to Taiwan than to Tokyo that feels like a different country entirely. The Ishigaki Island experience centers on extraordinary marine life—this is one of the world's most reliable spots to see manta rays year-round—combined with some of Okinawa Prefecture's most dramatic scenery: steep jungle-covered mountains dropping to coral-edged bays. Unlike the flat terrain of Miyako, Ishigaki has real topography, including Omoto-dake at 526 meters, the highest peak in Okinawa Prefecture. The island's capital, Ishigaki City, has enough restaurants, guesthouses, and culture to fill several days, while day trips to Taketomi, Iriomote, and Kohama islands open entirely different worlds.
Manta Ray Encounters at Manta Scramble
Manta Scramble, a cleaning station off the northwest coast of Ishigaki near Kabira Bay, is one of the world's great marine encounters. Manta rays gather at specific coral heads where smaller fish remove parasites from their bodies, allowing snorkelers and divers to observe them hovering just meters away. The site is accessible year-round, but sightings are most reliable from April through November when water temperature peaks. Snorkeling tours from Ishigaki City run 6,000-9,000 yen per person and typically include 90 minutes at the site plus equipment.
Kabira Bay itself, a few hundred meters from Manta Scramble, is one of Okinawa's most photographed seascapes—small forested islands dot an impossibly blue lagoon protected by an outer reef. Swimming is prohibited in the main bay to protect the coral, but glass-bottom boat tours (1,500 yen) let you see the reef and the farm where black pearls are cultivated.
Day Trips to Iriomote and Taketomi Islands
Iriomote Island, a 40-minute ferry ride from Ishigaki, is 90 percent primary jungle and home to the endangered Iriomote wildcat, one of the world's rarest felines. Kayaking up the Urauchi River through dense mangrove forest is the classic Iriomote experience—tour operators offer half-day kayak trips for around 8,500 yen including the ferry. Pinaisara Falls, accessible only by kayak and jungle hiking, drops 55 meters into a pool and is the island's signature sight.
Taketomi Island, just 10 minutes by ferry (780 yen), preserves Ryukyuan village architecture almost perfectly—white sand paths lined with coral stone walls, red-tiled rooftops, and gardens of bougainvillea. Rent a bicycle (500 yen/hour) and explore at leisure; the whole island can be circled in an hour. Water Buffalo Cart rides through the village center cost 1,500 yen and move at a pace that feels perfectly suited to the atmosphere.
Best Beaches and Snorkeling on Ishigaki
Yonehara Beach on the northeast coast is surrounded by one of Okinawa's healthiest fringing reefs, accessible directly from shore. Giant clams, sea turtles, and enormous brain corals are all within snorkeling distance. Equipment rental costs 1,000-1,500 yen from the adjacent camping ground. Sunset Beach near Kabira offers calmer water and is suitable for families with small children.
- Getting there: daily direct flights from Tokyo Haneda (3 hours, 15,000-35,000 yen) and from Naha (55 min)
- Getting around: rental car essential for exploring the island (2,500-4,000 yen/day)
- Yaeyama soba: rice noodles in pork broth topped with juicy pork ribs, the local specialty for 800 yen
- Ishigaki beef: prized Yaeyama wagyu raised on the island; try teppanyaki dinner from 5,000 yen/person
- Best months: October to May; summer (June-September) is very hot, humid, and typhoon-prone
- Coral reef health: most sites are in excellent condition; use reef-safe sunscreen to help preserve them
- Star-gazing: Ishigaki and the Yaeyamas are a designated Dark Sky area with minimal light pollution
- Paikaji cultural performance: nightly Yaeyama music and dance shows at restaurants in Ishigaki City
Budget four to five days for Ishigaki to include the manta snorkeling, a full day on Iriomote, and time for Taketomi plus beach exploration. The island's new airport (opened 2013) connects directly to major mainland cities, making it more accessible than ever while still feeling genuinely remote.
