Hiking in Hokkaido: Daisetsuzan, Rausu, and Coastal Trails
Hokkaido's wilderness hiking covers Japan's largest national park, volcanic summits, and lonely coastal cliffs. This guide covers the best trails and seasons for Daisetsuzan and beyond.
Hiking in Hokkaido offers a style of wilderness encounter nearly impossible in the rest of Japan — vast treeless plateaus, volcanic terrain that steams and growls, and a genuine sense that you are in a landscape shaped by forces far larger than human infrastructure. Daisetsuzan National Park alone covers 2,267 square kilometers (Japan's largest national park), and the combination of volcanic peaks, alpine flowers, and autumn colors that arrive a full month earlier than on Honshu makes Hokkaido a destination for serious hikers who want to escape crowds.
Daisetsuzan: The Roof of Hokkaido
Daisetsuzan (The Great White Mountain Group) is centered on a cluster of volcanoes rising above 2,000 meters — Asahidake (2,291 meters, the highest in Hokkaido), Kurodake, and Tomuraushi form the main peaks. A ropeway and gondola from Asahidake Onsen and Sounkyo Onsen respectively lift hikers to above 1,600 meters, shortening the approach considerably. The high plateau connecting the summits is a botanical paradise in July when Japanese alpine flowers bloom in carpets across the snowmelt landscape.
The classic multi-day traverse from Asahidake to Sounkyo covers approximately 30 kilometers over 2 days, passing the summit of Asahidake, crossing the high plateau, and descending to Sounkyo via Kurodake. Mountain huts (ryunzan sansou) are available on the plateau at around 3,500-4,500 yen per person without meals — hikers must carry all food for overnight trips. Autumn on this route, typically in late September, produces Japan's earliest fall foliage.
Rausu: Volcanic Ridge and Bear Country
Mount Rausu (1,661 meters) on the Shiretoko Peninsula is a UNESCO World Heritage summit with one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in Japan. The ascent from Rausu Onsen takes 4-5 hours for the 9-kilometer round trip through mature birch and subalpine forest, with views toward the Russian islands of Kunashir on clear days. Bear spray is strongly recommended (available to rent at the visitor center) and hikers should make noise continuously on the trail.

Wildlife, Safety, and Seasonal Planning
Hokkaido has significant wildlife including brown bears (Higuma), Ezo deer, red foxes, and in winter, Steller's sea eagles on the eastern coast. Bear encounters are rare but possible on many backcountry trails — register your plan at the trailhead, carry bear spray, and never leave food unattended. The hiking season for high alpine areas runs mid-June to early October; some lower trails in Daisetsuzan National Park are accessible year-round with appropriate winter equipment.
A rental car is almost essential for independent Hokkaido hiking — trailheads are rarely on bus routes, and the distances between key areas are large. Sapporo makes a practical base from which to day-trip to Daisetsuzan and Jozankei, while Kushiro or Abashiri work better for Shiretoko and Rausu.
