Tokyo Haneda Airport to City: Train, Bus, and Taxi Guide

Haneda Airport is just 20-40 minutes from central Tokyo by rail. The Tokyo Monorail, Keikyu Line, and limousine bus all serve the airport with different tradeoffs on cost, destination, and convenience.

Haneda Airport to Tokyo transfers are significantly easier than Narita because the airport sits just 20 kilometers from central Tokyo, making rail connections genuinely fast and cheap. The Haneda Airport to Tokyo journey takes 18-30 minutes by train depending on your destination and which of the two rail options you choose. This proximity makes Haneda the preferred airport for international arrivals whenever a choice exists. The terminal configuration matters: Terminals 1 and 2 serve domestic flights and most international airlines; the newer Terminal 3 (International Terminal) serves international flights with direct rail connections below the building. All three terminals connect to both the Tokyo Monorail and the Keikyu Railway.

Option 1: Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho

The Tokyo Monorail runs from Haneda Airport International Terminal to Hamamatsucho Station (JR Yamanote Line connection) in 18 minutes for 500 yen. Hamamatsucho connects to the Yamanote Line, giving access to Shinagawa, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, and everywhere else on the circular route. Trains run every 3-7 minutes during peak hours. Buy tickets from machines at the station or tap in with Suica/Pasmo IC card. Covered by JR Pass between Hamamatsucho and Tokyo Station (not the airport section itself).

Option 2: Keikyu Line to Shinagawa or Asakusa

The Keikyu Airport Line runs directly from Haneda to Shinagawa Station in 13 minutes (310 yen) and continues (via connections) to Shimbashi, Asakusabashi, and Asakusa. This is the best option for travelers heading to Shinjuku (change at Shinagawa for JR or Keikyu to Shinjuku), east Tokyo (Asakusa, Akihabara), or Yokohama (direct service, 34 minutes, 450 yen). The Keikyu Limited Express stops at fewer stations and saves 5 minutes—look for it on the departures board. IC cards accepted.

Option 3: Airport Limousine Bus (Door-to-Door)

Haneda Limousine Bus connects directly to major Tokyo hotels and train terminals for 900-1,500 yen. Routes cover Shinjuku (35-60 minutes depending on traffic), Shibuya (25-50 minutes), Roppongi (25-45 minutes), and Marunouchi/Tokyo Station (20-40 minutes). Tickets at the Limousine Bus counter in arrivals; buses depart from clearly marked stops outside the terminal. Best for travelers with heavy bags who want to reach a hotel without stairs or line changes.

  • Taxi from Haneda: approximately 5,000-8,000 yen to central Tokyo depending on destination; very reasonable if splitting with 3-4 people
  • Late night: both Monorail and Keikyu run until midnight; after midnight use taxi or shared ride (MK Taxi has fixed airport rates)
  • Suica card: buy at Haneda station machines for 500 yen deposit; works on all trains, convenience stores, and most taxis
  • JR Pass exchange: Haneda does NOT have a JR Pass exchange counter; exchange at Tokyo Station or major JR stations
  • Terminal location: all three Haneda terminals have direct rail connections; check which terminal your airline uses
  • WiFi SIM: IIJmio, Docomo Tourist SIM, and B-mobile counters are all present in Haneda International Terminal arrivals
  • Return to airport: factor in 45-60 minutes total for return journey including check-in; Keikyu from Shinagawa is often fastest

Haneda's proximity to central Tokyo makes the transfer question much easier than Narita. Most travelers should take whichever rail line connects most directly to their hotel neighborhood—Monorail to Hamamatsucho for central and west Tokyo, Keikyu for Shinagawa, east Tokyo, or Yokohama. The whole process from landing to hotel room can be under 90 minutes including customs, which by international airport standards is genuinely fast.
