Best Autumn Leaves in Tokyo

Tokyo's koyo season runs through November and into December. Here are the best autumn leaf spots — ginkgo avenues, garden maples, and hidden riverside paths.

Tokyo's autumn foliage season is less celebrated than Kyoto's but has its own distinct character — particularly the city's ginkgo boulevards, which turn the streets of Shinjuku and Jingu Gaien into tunnels of blazing yellow in November. The best autumn leaves in Tokyo span multiple species and styles: formal garden maples in Shinjuku Gyoen, ginkgo-lined avenues in Meiji-dori, historic temple gardens in Hamarikyu, and wild mountain forest colors in the Okutama wilderness just two hours west by train.

Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Festival

The Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue runs for 300 meters near Aoyama, lined with 146 ginkgo trees that form a golden tunnel in mid to late November. The annual Ginkgo Festival (Icho Matsuri) in the last two weeks of November draws food stalls, weekend crowds, and photographers. The carpet of golden fallen leaves on the ground beneath the trees is as beautiful as the canopy above. Access from Gaienmae Station on the Ginza Line.

Shinjuku Gyoen in Autumn

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Tokyo's premier cherry blossom destination in spring, is equally impressive for autumn color. The garden's variety of deciduous trees — Japanese maple, Turkish hazel, ginkgo, sycamore, and sweetgum — creates a patchwork of red, orange, and yellow across its 58 hectares. Peak color at Shinjuku Gyoen typically falls in late November, running 2-3 weeks after the Japanese Alpine peaks. Entry costs 500 yen.

  • Yoyogi Park — large park with ginkgo avenues, free, locals with picnics
  • Koishikawa Korakuen — Edo garden, 300 yen, quiet, superb maple colors

Night Illumination and Practical Tips

Rikugien Garden holds an autumn illumination event in November and December where the entire garden is lit from dusk to 9 PM, creating an extraordinary reflection of colored trees in the central lake. Entry during illumination period costs 300 yen. Queues form on weekend evenings — arrive at opening time (5:30 PM) for the best viewing.

For a day trip out of Tokyo, Nikko (2 hours from Shinjuku by Romancecar or JR) peaks 2-3 weeks before central Tokyo's gardens and offers mountain-scale autumn scenery. Kamakura — 1 hour from Tokyo — peaks slightly later and combines ancient temple gardens with forest trails and ocean views. Both are excellent additions to a Tokyo base autumn foliage itinerary.
