Shiga: Nagahama Castle, Gateway to Japan’s Great Unifier

The site of Nagahama Castle is remembered as the first domain of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, later known as one of Japan’s great unifiers. Although the original castle no longer stands, the grounds still preserve key markers such as the remains of the horse stables and statues honoring Hideyoshi. The rooftop observation deck provides sweeping views of Lake Biwa and surrounding battlefields, allowing guests to connect geography with history as they learn about the struggles that determined Japan’s future.
