Unlike many castles in Japan, Kumamoto Castle experienced real warfare—twice—and was never captured, earning a reputation as an unshakable fortress. However, in 2016, a devastating earthquake caused significant damage to its walls and turrets. While the main keep survived, much of the structure required restoration. Today, Kumamoto Castle is undergoing a large-scale reconstruction using a blend of traditional techniques and modern technology.
