Tanabata Festival in Sendai 2026

The Sendai Tanabata Festival is the most famous Tanabata celebration in Japan, held from August 6-8. The city is decorated with thousands of large, colorful streamers (fukinagashi) made of washi paper, along with ornate bamboo decorations that hang from storefronts and lampposts throughout the downtown area.

The festival celebrates the legend of Orihime and Hikoboshi (star-crossed lovers who meet once a year). Evening fireworks displays, parades, and food stalls complete the festive atmosphere. The decorations are truly spectacular and make for incredible photos.
