Osaka Tenjin Matsuri 2026

The Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka is one of Japan's three major festivals (along with Gion Matsuri and Kanda Matsuri). The festival honors Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, at the Osaka Tenmangu Shrine.

The highlight is the river procession on July 25, where approximately 100 boats decorated with lanterns float down the Okawa River, accompanied by fireworks, traditional music, and dance performances on the boats. The land procession earlier in the day features a portable shrine (mikoshi) carried through the streets.
