Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) 2026

The Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) is one of Kyoto's three great festivals, held annually on October 22. The highlight is a grand historical procession stretching over 2km, featuring more than 2,000 participants dressed in meticulously accurate costumes from various periods of Japanese history, from the Meiji Restoration back to the Heian period.

The procession starts at the Imperial Palace and winds its way to Heian Shrine. It's a living history lesson and a photographer's dream. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot along the parade route.
