Hakata Gion Yamakasa 2026
The Hakata Gion Yamakasa is Fukuoka's most famous festival, dating back over 700 years. From July 1-15, elaborately decorated floats (kazariyamakasa) are displayed throughout the city. The main event is the early morning race (Oiyama) on July 15, where teams of men in traditional loincloths race 1-ton floats through the streets.
The atmosphere is intense and thrilling, with crowds lining the route to cheer on the teams. The festival is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event.
