Gion Matsuri 2026
The Gion Matsuri is Kyoto's most famous festival, dating back to 869. Throughout July, the city comes alive with festivities culminating in the grand float processions (Yamaboko Junko) on July 17 and 24. The evenings before are equally magical with the Yoiyama street parties where lantern-lit floats are on display, food stalls line the streets, and locals wear yukata.
Don't miss the Ato Matsuri (later festival) procession and the chance to explore the historic Gion district during this incredible time.
