Universal Studios Japan Osaka: Best Rides, Mario World, and Tips

Universal Studios Japan in Osaka is home to Super Nintendo World and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Here's the essential guide to rides, tickets, and tips.

Universal Studios Japan in Osaka is one of the most visited theme parks in Asia, drawing over 14 million visitors per year. The Universal Studios Japan guide below covers the park's standout attractions — led by the globally celebrated Super Nintendo World, which debuted here before any other park worldwide. Located in Osaka's Sakurajima district, USJ is 10 minutes from Osaka Station by JR and makes an excellent full-day excursion during any Kansai itinerary.

Super Nintendo World

Super Nintendo World opened at USJ in February 2021 and remains the park's most popular section. The immersive land recreates the visual language of the Mario games with coin blocks, moving Chain Chomps, and character meet-and-greets. The Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge ride uses augmented reality headsets inside actual ride cars to put you in a Mario Kart race against Bowser's team — it is unlike any other theme park ride in the world.

Wristband Power-Up Bands (3,500 yen) allow you to interact with elements throughout Super Nintendo World — punch question blocks to collect virtual coins, battle Piranha Plants, and enter the Bowser's Challenge bonus game. The Toad's Cafe inside the area serves themed food including Princess Peach Caprese and Bowser's Meatball Soup.

Best Rides and Attractions

  • Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge — AR headset ride in Super Nintendo World
  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey — immersive Hogwarts ride
  • The Flying Dinosaur — record-holding flying coaster in Jurassic World
  • Hollywood Dream - The Ride — classic USJ roller coaster with music
  • Minion Park — Despicable Me themed area with multiple attractions
  • Attack on Titan seasonal experiences during USJ collab periods
  • Butterbeer at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter — iconic drink

Tickets, Express Passes, and Tips

One-day studio passes cost 9,400-10,800 yen (adults) depending on the date, with peak pricing on weekends and holidays. Express Passes (4,000-12,000 yen per bundle) allow queue-skipping on designated rides. An Express Pass 7 covering Mario Kart, Flying Dinosaur, Forbidden Journey, and four others is the most popular option. Book both studio passes and Express Passes in advance on the official USJ website.

Super Nintendo World requires a timed entry reservation on busy days — book your Mario World entry time simultaneously when purchasing your studio pass. Arrive at park opening (usually 9 AM) and head directly to Super Nintendo World before the entry reservation system kicks in. USJ is located at Sakurajima Station on the JR Yumesaki Line, one stop from Universal City Station which is reachable from JR Osaka Station in about 10 minutes.
